Miniature Orchids
Could we have a forum for Miniature Orchids?
|
OK, due to popular demand I made a
Miniatures Show & Tell forum. Mods, feel free to move any posts that you come across into it (leave permanent redirects though). Like the caption says, it's more for show & tell purposes only, though quite honestly I don't see why we couldn't show and tell under the appropriate Alliances, but that's just me. You guys ask, I deliver :) |
Marty, you just made a whole bunch of folks very happy
|
I aim to please :)

Thank you very much for the forum Marty... Now onto a possible next task... Fragrant flowers. We all know that the stinky ones are in the bulbo alliance but a Fragrant flower forum may help to spread the love for these exotic beauties a little more! Not all of my collection is fragrant but a vast majority is with smells of chocolate, honeysuckle, coconut, vanillia, raspberrys, peppery smells and even one that has the scent of pixie sticks!

~Scent~ well, that can be taken in several ways, can't it? I'd describe Cycnoches warcswiczii's scent as a combination of mothball, banana and cheap chablis - but it works for it AND it can be detected even from outside the house. Potent and pungent.
But I agree, sometimes orchids described as 'scented' have a nearly (or totally) undetectable scent. And all other things being equal, I would choose a 'scented' orchid over any other, even if it were less spectacular in bloom. Probably why I don't grow any Phalaenopsis. |
I have to chime in here...
I don't think we should start breaking down the forums by the orchids' attributes, such as size, scent or color. It can (and in my opinion, will) make the forums too confusing. The Mini Forum was set up as an extra because so many people wanted it...but it was not really necessary since we have a forum for Orchids In Bloom - which is essentially a Show & Tell area,,,for any sized 'chid. We love this site because there's so much great information being shared by so many wonderful folks...but if we keep breaking down the forums into individual attributes, it will become confusing. We're trying to help people become less confused, let's not make this site hard to navigate. Just my 10 cents...the heck with that 2 cents stuff ;) |
I think having a forum on minis and fragrant orchids allows people to see and experience orchid alliances they may never venture into. I am not, at this time a vanda owner for example, and only look occasionally to see some of the blooming plants. I may become interested if I find one that is in a mini version or that has a certain scent. I think these 2 different forums could expose people to orchids that may bring an extended interest in plants one may never have thought to consider.
Just my 50 cents .. with today's inflation that's about worth 2 cents ;) There are scented phals - for example Phalaenopsis violacea .. Phalaenopsis schilleriana, Phalaenopsis bellina Nancy - You might want to reconsider Phals ;) (I am still on the look out for a Brother Sarah Gold Sunset 'Sogo') |
Okay, so when my Haerella odorata blooms, which is supposed to have a scent...but doesn't...does it go in the mini forum (it is a mini) , the scent forum (even though for some reason, mine doesn't smell) or the alliance forum?
Marty will make the final call on this and I'm sure he welcomes all our members opinions...so keep 'em coming :) My photos will always go in my gallery and the Orchids in Bloom forum and my questions will go into the specific alliance. ;) |
