ok mine did the same after coming from Germany. It' current with vanilla coming from nurseries.

Cut largely with a sterilized tool about one cm before the next knot, so not the one near the black, the next.

Repot if it's not done. Mine is recovering in a cut bottle (high walls) roots in sphagnum NZ I let dry between watering and it stopped by itself.

And give it light! Not full, not direct, but it's at the better place in my north room so moderate but full morning sun at 7 everyday for 30-60 minutes.

My two vanilla plants both died at the growth points in that same way when we received them a couple months ago and are just now coming back from the bottom of the plant

It happens regularly when they come in after p&h, even in warm enough season. Maybe it's just the substrate too wet for the few days needed… It can start a few weeks after coming in!

I've still to find a reliable method to avoid this but it doesn't do for leafless species. Leafy ones seem responding better to repot/dry keeping on the very dry side for a month (I'm not saying I don't water).

Anyway, once the black stops, and you see now roots or a growth, it's ok. But this will occur only after resuming normal watering. And NEVER overwater a vanilla not doing anything, the first cold it'll feel will start the thing and here it has nothing to do with temps, it happens in 24-26°C here.

Thanks to everyone. I asked the grower that sold it to me and some other ZAR growers. They said to cut of at the node just below the black part and cover it with cinnamon.

He said he collected his plant on a beach in the only part that it grows in the ZAR, a beach on the northern KZN.

My bit reduced to 2 segments 3 nodes is ok now, recovering and with a nice root to pump in sphagnum (aerial turning to activity). So no case is desperate when the conditions are good.

I should see in a few week something growing.
