Project 2017: Rupicolous Laelias

Popped in a couple times over my hiatus...L. schmidtii was my choice. I'm hoping for sheaths on the two developing growths. I've been following my Sophronitis watering schedule for this one, with light levels on the upper side of the Cattleya range over the past 3-4 months. I've noticed much more robust root growth and the leaves have anthocyanin in more considerable amount now.

Here are photos of my plants from about a week ago.

Each has completed/nearly completed 1 new growth; the longipes has started two tiny new growths in the past month, and the endsfeldzii has started another one!

In the first photo (longipes), the largest new growth is left of center, with one of the newest growths emerging from its base - just to the right of that, the shriveled brown growth is a new growth it had been working on over the summer, but one day it had gone all yellow, and it swiftly went brown and dead. I think that's my fault - I'd put the plant back in the window with the new growths facing the glass the previous day, and it had been sunny, though far from the hottest day of the summer.

Second photo shows the 2nd tiny new growth on the longipes. This plant is growing lots of new roots along with the newest little growths.

This plant hasn't darkened at all in the sun, so perhaps it hasn't been getting quite enough. The endsfeldzii, on the other hand, has some nice reddish coloring on the edges of some of its leaves.

Third and fourth photos are the endsfeldzii - its biggest new growth is only visible as a pair of leaves emerging from the bark, the majority of it is buried!!

Since so much of the longipes is above the top of the pot, I've been looking around to find another slightly larger net pot I can set this one inside of, to give its lower roots more room and also so I can get some bark in better position around all the exposed upper roots and help them stay damp a bit longer.

I'm still watering them every day, though since nights are now dropping into the 60s in my apartment, they're still a bit moist in the morning (and because they should be moving into a "less rainy" period) I'm giving them a lighter morning soak.

Hi All!

Love seeing all of the pics. This summer was rough on my orchids (had a really busy work schedule and a <1 year old baby) that has occupied a lot of my time. As such my orchids have experienced some neglect. I will give these orchids some TLC and get some pics up of them soon.

Not a lot to report, just checking in more or less. The newest growth is as big as the others, lots of the purple coloring on its leaf also

Happy Holidays to all and hope everyone who wished for snow at this time got their wish.

Just updating on how things are going. Both the L. gloedeniana and L. crispata are matureing nicely. Both have two new growths, this season. The crispata has produced two sheaths and one has a spike (keeping fingers crossed, photo 2)Hope the other sheath will also produce a spike too, right now not looking likely. We have cut down on watering, we are watering once every 10-14 days now instead of 3-4 times a week. We are keeping the humidity high though, 70-100%. Temperatures are 70-80F in the day, depending on how much sunshine we get, the night time temps run about 55F. So we are getting 15-25F temp deferential between day and night. In the greenhouse, they are getting more light than they got this summer and are showing more red on the leaves once again. The gloedeniana is really showing more red, and its second new growth looks promising as it seems to be more vigorous than the first growth. The first growth has a sheath and maybe a small bud developing, but it is very small (photo 4). Hope everyone’s plants are developing and matureing just as well as ours.

So my little guy, the Laelia gloedeniana, has somehow dislodged itself from its pot. Not quite sure how this happened. In doing so, the new growth on one side, and the pseudobulb next to it that matured over the summer, died off. I was going to make sure not to jostle it and repot it in the same pot with some small gravel and a little perlite as soon as I see some new roots. Everything else looks good, my other new growth is maturing nicely and I have a sheath on one of the pbulbs but no signs of buds forming inside yet. Im still lightly watering/misting this about 2x per week. The humidity Has been fluctuating but has remained fairly high with a few days in the 40% range but mostly between 80%-95%. The lowest temps it has seen is 45F with zero issues.

The L. Ipanema Beach has been growing under the same winter conditions, with less water as it is in a larger plastic pot with bark, but doesn’t seem as happy and has stalled. It hasn’t developed any bloom sheaths that I can see. I’m thinking it either needs more light or more warmth. So I’m going to kick up the heat, bring it indoors and put it in a bright location and see if that helps.

I really want these two to do well so that I can justify getting some more

The crispata (flava) is getting close to blooming. It has grown a spike that is about 12” (28cm) tall. All the buds are the tip of the spike and are starting to swell. It has a new growth starting to grow also. This plant has done well over the last year.
The gloedeniana is just hanging out, not doing much. It to has grown a new growth this month, hope for the future. It still has a green sheath that has enlarged slightly, maybe this spring, it to, will spike and flower. Finger crossed. Hope all your plants are doing well and will be blooming soon. Keep posting
