It’s that time you’ve all been waiting for; time to start the spring 2015 plant project !!
For those that haven’t participated in such a project before, here’s the concept: We research orchid species that meet set criteria, and once we have a list of at least 5-6 candidates, all participants vote for their favorite. The winning plant is our project plant that everyone will purchase. Then we can compare notes about culture, give tips to each other (and see who gets it to bloom first!)
These projects are meant to encourage people to try orchids that may not want to grow otherwise, while having the support of many other people growing the same plant. Maybe you think it’s too difficult to grow, or you just don’t like the plant. Even if you start out not liking it, a lot of people in past projects discovered that they did love the plant, and it’s so rewarding to be able to bloom a plant you never thought you’d own!
The ‘rules’ will pretty much follow what has been done in past years, which are designed to include a maximum number of people:
-
Temperature: intermediate
-
Age/Size: blooming size or near blooming size (should be BS in less than a year), and we usually stick to miniature-small to intermediate sized plants. No monsters!
-
Price: Max $20 / $30 CAN / 20€. Like last time the Canada limit is higher, because plants are more
expensive there. Maybe the limit will be increased a bit, I get the feeling that prices have gone up a bit, at least in Europe.
-
Availability: available in sufficient numbers/multiple growers for the main regions involved (usually Canada, US and Europe- but this will be decided based on the sign up list)
-
Preferably species (easier to find worldwide. Very common hybrids can be considered,if they can be found everywhere)
Once the project is started we may need to tweak the concept a bit if there are really way to many people signed up, and have 2 plants: a cool-intermediate, and a intermediate-warm.
There was a poll posted earlier this year to see what the preferred alliances were. It may be difficult to stick to those, but it gives a good starting point to search for candidates.
2015 Project, Pick an Alliance
Please sign up for the project here:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...up-thread.html
This thread is to make suggestions and discuss potential plants:
When making suggestions:
1)Please check that it meets the temperature and size criteria
2)In the case of species post the IOSPE link to the plant if possible.
3)Try to research growers that have it, within price range. For lists of reputable growers check previous project threads.
