Maxillariella Variabilis is available in the EU from Burnham from £7-£15 according to size and colour. I got a young black one with 5 pulbs from them at the RHS show last Saturday from the 5 for £20 section...

Would it be possible to give some idea of what temperatures are counted as intermediate? I'm getting the impression that different sites are using different boundaries, so in some cases it might make deciding if a plant fits more easy if we had actual temperatures to go on.

Regarding the Encyclia it seems near impossible to find in the US! I've also received an answer from the expert hobby grower (yes, you can be both

), this is the conditions she grows her Encyclia in:

Intermediate with temps ranging from 15C - 24C (night - day temps). She provides the same level of light as to a Cattleya. The Encyclia is potted in sphagnum and always kept moist but less so during the winter. She keeps it in a North facing window and uses extra light all year around to keep the appropriate light levels.

For you Americans out there the temps are 59F - 75.2F.

I would still classify this as a cool grower, but I'm just a newbie...

Coelogyne Ochracea: from what I'm reading it might survive and even flower in house conditions, but it does need cooler to do really well:

The one I smelt was so gorgeous I think I might be risking leaving it on the public access balcony to my flat this autumn (or trying it inside)... I don't know if people want to test out the 'has been known to flower in home temperatures' bit for the project though.

I think it's better to leave it out then. Cool temps are difficult for some people to manage, especially those living in warm regions.

I think if the Encyclia likes to stay between 59 and 75 degrees F in would be considered a cool grower. Most places get a lot warmer than that.

Yup. My flat for example... So if this one stays on the list I won't be able to vote for it which is too bad since it's so gorgeous! I might be bonkers, but I'm not completely nuts (yet) as to dare try something that might drop dead within a week (just a slight exaggeration there

I like the Encyclia too. It's gorgeous! But I don't want to kill it either. I would rather buy a plant that will grow well for me.
