Sorry Todd, I see you do have Paph. purpuratum, is it a vigorous grower at all?

I didn't realize the Onc. lanceanum got big, Clouds describes it as a windowsill type, so I figured it would be ok. I found a link if anyone is interested: Trinidad and Tobago Orchid Society - Database

I like Oncidum lanceanum as well and especially with mottled leaves (character when not in bloom), but I did read where it was hard to keep alive.

I'm rather partial to the Cymbidium dayanum, Phal. phillipinensis and the Trichoglottis.

i would prefer the cymbidium dayanum, trichoglottis philippinensis, phal mariae, amesiella philippensis, phal hieroglyphica.
i've arranged it from most preferred to least.

Here's some news from Liz:

While I was at J&L today I had a talk with Cordelia about the project and possible plants. I explained there will be about 30 of us from around the world.

Here are the results:

Miltonia spectabilis var. Moreliana, they don't have enough of those to go around.

However she come up with these as possible good choices:

IOSPE PHOTOS
should bloom in 1 to 2 yrs
or
IOSPE PHOTOS
should bloom in 1 yr (note she said this would tolerate warmer temps than indictaed)

They also have another plant that is plentiful enough to go around. However she said something about black spotting easily occuring on these plants (couldn't find a link with pic so here's their description)

Odontocidium Elke Stolze - I - ptd - $ 15
(Onc. ornithorhynchum X Odm. bictoniense) dense sprays of bright pink to purple flowers - easy culture - blooms in the spring. Mature.


She also mentioned a possible discount. They are willing to ship to Canada and knows all the ins & outs. Apparently there is a $5 paper fee and $23 inspection fee per SHIPMENT ( key word being shipment). If the Canadians can get together all the plants can be shipped once for a one time fee as opposed to individual shipments being charged individual fees. However apparently importing plants into Austrailia would work. They will quarinteen the plants and subject them to treatment.

Sue, its wonderful that J&L can ship to canada BUT even if sending them to a central person here then redistributing them across Canada, the cost of the plant will end up at least double the catalogue price (exchange, extra postage) If the final selected plant is not available in Canada, then I won't be partaking, however, I'm hoping it won't come to that!

Barb, my purpuratum used to be vigorous but I didn't repot it often enough and the plant went downhill rapidly. I managed to save it but its been a slow recovery.

Ken, I also read that Onc. lanceatum is a tricky one to grow...too bad as I really like the foliage on that one.

That is a very kind offer and I do like the look of the Zygo. one (or whatever hybrid); however, I'm with Todd on the shipping problem. It would just be too expensive, I would rather spend that on a nice paph here in Canada.

Todd, I know how you feel, if you let slippers go too long they sure aren't happy about it. Just about happened to my seedling Dragontale.

It's too bad about that Onc. I'll probably try it anyway since I seem to have more luck with the 'difficult' things. Go figure.

Barb, ther are several vendors in Canada who sell Zygopetalums and their hybrids. The Orchid Shop (BC) has a deal on now with BS Zygo for only $10! I expect they have no names, but who cares at that price. I hope they still have them offered later in the spring.

Easy, everybody... it was just a suggestion and suggestions are always appreciated and discussed

If we decide on a plant that is available at J & L, and also available in Canada...it's nice to know we have a vendor interested in assisting us in the project
