Strange looking new growths on maxillaria tenuifolia...
I got this in the spring at Marlow's Orchids' open house. It's been putting out new growths nicely but these 2 look distinctly different from the others. I've been giving it as much sun as possible because I've read that's what they like but now I'm concerned it's gotten too much... they almost look like buds to me but I was under the impression that these are strictly springtime/once a year bloomers and it was in bloom when I got it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

They look like buds to me!
I looked at OrchidWiz. The peak blooming time in N. America is May but the graph shows some blooming in Jan and every month thru to and including Aug. So if it is a newly matured growth, it is not so unusual to be blooming I guess.

Silken, that's the other part that confounds me...I'd hardly consider what they're growing off of to be a mature pbulb. Now, this is my first and only orchid of this type but compared to the other pbulbs I would consider it still a new growth... I've attached a couple more pics and as long as it's not dying I'm happy, it just looked strange to me

Congratulations! This is a really great orchid, isn't it? I love the little fragrant flowers.

I guess so! I've basically ignored it other than watering it and giving it the occasional glance to admire how many new growths it's put out. I really need to learn to ignore them all because the other plant I've basically ignored (my noid Miltoniopsis) has sent out 3 spikes. They're sneaky little buggers

It's blooming :)
Why can't all orchids go from bud to bloom this quickly??? Started opening yesterday morning, scent is there but faint. Can't wait til they're both open

I discovered that mine was blooming again a second time. It is the first year it has ever done this.
