Batemania colleyi Male
Default Batemania colleyi

I am a bit proud of this plant. I had another species of Batemania (also spelled Batemannia, for James Bateman, an Englishman) years back that I missed a lot. My second B. was fresh imported and raised to orchid heaven quickly.
When I saw a strong established plant 14 month ago I hesitated, then the challenge was stronger.
I grow it intermediate to warm. I think it is important to offer more or less even and moist conditions without a strong rest period. The potting medium consists of bark with a good part of expanded clay, that keeps water supply even. The plastic pot is relatively big. Also spraying with fungizide is helpful.
The plant stands close to the ground in my greenhouse, where fresh air rushes in in summertime. But there it is better sheltered from hot air in the summer. It gets bright indirect light. Don't trust a growing advise to treat it like a Bifrenaria.
The flower spikes emerge with the new leads in springtime. My plant has 2 new leads, one with two spikes, the other one with one. Each spike carries 5 flowers, so there is a total of 15 flowers. Maybe ist an alba variety, as there is no other colour than green and white.
