I got this today from Trader Joe's for only $7.99! I couldn't pass it by. The flowers look more blue than what the camera captured - must be my lighting.

Now I need to read up on how to care for this beauty

beautiful plant . that one should have some fragrance. I see lots of new growths. Nice healthy plant I woulda taken that one home too!!!

Zygo things do well for me staying evenly moist, again, Not let them dry out. If you can keep them cool they will take a good amt of light and you might get some more blooms out of that plant real soon

keep in mind if you arent giving it the maximum light it can take bec its too warm or just not there, hold back on the water some while the shoots are sprouting. The smaller ones will rot pretty easy if you dont get a good balance of water and lighting.

Blue Birds is an excellent clone. Mine will bloom about 2-3 times a year, so you should be in for a treat. If it gets sufficient light/warm during the day it should be nicely fragrant.
RJs comments are spot on about fairly even moisture. These do well in any media, provided they dont dry out.
I will make one point which you may come across while growing it. Try and avoid getting water on the leaves. These really like to get black spots on the leaves when water gets on them. It's nothing to worry about (mine dont spread), but if you can avoid it, the leaves will look nicer. Good Luck, it's a great flower.

That's a nice healthy plant.. excellent buy for 7.99. I've never seen a plant of that variety that large, most of the time they are only 1 or 2 bulbs and they sell for more than that.

Beautiful blooms. I posted a thread about the same flower you have a couple of weeks ago...
we could compare culture. My plant is still in bloom. You have several pbulbs making it specimen size...mine has only 4 bulbs. You also have a couple of new growths that will spike soon.

I bought this orchid at Trader Joe's too. The color was what drawn me to it. Nice faint fragrance. I hope I can grow it. Live in So. California, so will try it outdoors semi shade, intermediate temp. I will make sure it gets a bit more water than my other Zygos.
Any thoughts anybody?

I would not grow Zygonisia outdoors here in SoCal. It gets too cold for them. If you've never done a temperature reading outdoors in the winter during the night, I highly recommend you do so. You'll be surprised by how cold it actually can get down here. There are times when it does get down to 36 F during the winters at night.

Zygonisia is an intergeneric cross between Zygopetalum and Acacallis (aka Aganisia). Plants in the genus Acacallis are not cold hardy. In fact, they can decline quite rapidly in temperatures that go below 55 F - 60 F.

On the other hand, your other Zygos if they're in the genus Zygopetalum should handle the cooler temperatures here very well.

I have a heated cold frame. Temp goes down to mid 50's would that be ok?
