Default Bifrenaria inodora (type)

This is the typical color for inodoras; as all varieties, this "inodora" has a strong scent!

Is it plain green, Frederico? No purple stains on the petals or sepals?

Hi Mauro!
The 'plain green' color is an artifact; this flower is shaded by lots of leaves, but if it was under bright light, the purple stains appear!

Neat species Frederico. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'vr just added this to my wish list...I think I can find a place for it in my growing area...hopefully it is a warm or intermediate grower.

Looks great! It looks like you have more buds in the background too.

Many years ago, Alvim Seidel wrote me that while some people considered Bifrenaria inodora to be synonymous with Bifrenaria fuerstenbergiana, he did not. Alvim claimed that the inodora was scentless whereas the fuerstenbergiana had quite a noticeable scent. Unfortunately, this difference isn't accepted criteria to differentiate species to the best of my knowledge.

Alvim wrote that the scent characteristic (or lack of) bred "true". Any comments?

Hi Stitz!

The name "inodora" was given to the plant by a European taxonomist (Lindley), without access to the plant alive, only to material from herbarium; thus, it is acceptable that the plant has this name. I have several clones (including many "fuerstenbergianas" and "inodoras" from Seidel) and it's impossible to see (or smell) any differences at all! The scent varies according the hour of the day (more intense in the morning) and according the age of the flower (too 'young' or too 'old' flowers are 'inodoras'!). I agree with the taxonomists, "inodora" and "fuerstenbergiana" are only synonyms!
