Default New to Orchid Board Long Post

Hi Everyone. I am excited to have joined the Board!I have been reading on and off here for a while and everyone seems to have a wealth of knowledge. I have to confess I am an Orchid Addict! My mother in law bought us a Phalenopsis for our Anniversary last March and that was it, i'm hooked!!
Of course my husband seems to be an addict also as he feeds my addiction! So i'm Really confused as I have a number of different Orchids. I don't know very much about them except they are Absolutely Gorgeous need light, water and are Very Intriguing! I love the challenge of getting them to reflower!I bought a Paph from a garden center at 50% off and i've got it to rebloom once!! It was Sooooo Exciting! It now has another spike inflorescence? on it! I guess that makes me a real Orchidist!!?? I don't know what it's name is as there was No Tag on it when we bought it. I've managed to kill a few so it's time for me to get some help for my Addiction!

Welcome to Orchid Board! Congrats on reblooming your paph! I know a lot of people have trouble blooming that one so you must be doing something right! What other orchids do you have? You're lucky to have a husband that enjoys your hobby too. It'll make things easier in the long run when you go completely orchid nuts! Have fun on here and feel free to ask anything. Everyone is very helpful.

Hi Sarah, Thankyou for the welcome. I keep my paph in my dining room it's been in a southern window all winter. That room seems cooler than the rest of the rooms in my house. The other paph I got at the same place hasn't done a thing and i'm watering it just the same as the one I had flower again. They both have mottled leaves.I picked up some from Holland Park ,Terra ,Costco and the rest I found at Cloud's Orchids....that place is awesome!! I know the culture of all of the orchids from Cloud's as there are tags on all of them but i'm not sure I can read the tags properly yet. I have Cattleya's, Oncidiums,Phragmepedium It's called Cape Sunset I think. It has in brackets (Eric Young x schlimii) I also have alot of Phalaenopsis I think 8 of them! Oh...I have a Brassavola Nadosa it's on a piece of wood hanging over my kitchen sink it seems to
be growing really well! Nice roots with light green tips.
I think I already have gone Orchid nuts!!! The only problem is now I want to get to know these alot better and be able to take care of them properly as I said i've killed a few..yes expensive ones......ack! Talk about going into something blind! I keep most everything on the dry side except for the Phragmepedium. I have learned a bit more about orchid culture since I found this board and I have bought a couple of books. Yes it's awesome having a husband that loves these also but he just buys them randomly and will bring home a couple at a time and most without tags. I have asked him to stop for now as it's a bit overwhelming trying to find the right place for them and also how to look after them properly. I have them in the kitchen, dining room, spare bedroom, family room and bathroom. Thank goodness the whole back of my house faces South!!! Sorry this was soooooo long. I hope i'm posting it back in the right place?

Hi Phalpal! Welcome to OB.
First of all, we have all lost a few orchids during our growing years. It happens. Sometimes it was already happening upon purchase. You just can't be sure who takes care of it and how even before you purchase it. An old saying goes: "I've never killed an orchid, however, orchids have died on my watch."
And another thing you mentioned is your enabling husband. I think you should rent him out to all of us ladies whose husband's are almost perfect, but just need that "it's good to purchase orchids for your wife" tweaking. Let me be the first on the list!
Last but never least.....we love pictures! Lots and lots of pictures! Feel free to share your beauties with all of us! We are so glad to have you join us.

and welcome to OB.
It sounds like you have a good collection going. First it starts with 1, then 2, then 10, 50, 100 and it never stops! Even when we run out of space there is always room for 'one more'. We all kill some orchids, beginners and experts alike. Some people just have trouble with some genera or the plant was in a bad shape to begin with.

You'll see, you'll have a great time here. And if you want to enlarge your collection, you're in the right place. There are many orchid enablers here!

Thanks for the welcome bellini girl. I'm in Ontario. There is so much information in here it's wonderful! Ok i'll let him bring me home just a few more! Since my Paph I paid $40.00 for has root rot really bad...I sure hope I can save it as it only has about 1/2 inch of good root if that.

Sandy
