I have inherited this orchid and was hoping someone may be able to steer me in the direction of what I have. It is growing, flowering and is generally happy, I just have no idea what it is.
Many thanks
(The plant seen on the left side is a different plant that has been moved to its own pot, another mystery plant that I will ask for help on hopefully when it flowers )
The flowering orchid is a Miltonia. There are only about 9 species in the genus so you might like to identify it to the species level yourself, though Miltonia regnellii is a good place to start.
The one on the right is a Dendrobium. I think it’s a Dendrobium nobile variety of some sort, though would need to see more or a flower to be sure.
Yeah, I guess I should have pointed out that it’s impossible to identify an orchid with precision if it comes to you without a name tag. There are so many look alikes.
To get around this I just use the term ‘like’ on the tag. So the tag might say ‘Miltonia like regnellii’ or ‘Oncidium like sweet sugar’. That way I don’t forget what the flower looks like, stops me buying duplicates, and gives me care information that is close enough for most purposes; and no-one needs to get upset about me incorrectly naming a noid.
Buying noids is a good way to expand a collection inexpensively, the current specimen being a good example.
