Am I a dendrobium?
Hi!
I went to the farmer's market today and thus accidentally bought an orchid. If I am not mistaken (which of course is always likely) this is a dendrobium, but does anyone have a guess as to which type and what it wants?
I really love the subtle pale pink color...this was the only plant of that color among a bunch of purples and whites, and it sort of called to me. ^^;

I also like colors other than purple or white. Looks like a dendrobium to me. Mr. Google will give you culture information.

Yes, it's a Den phalaenopsis hybrid. The pale pink is very nice.
There is a lot about them here on the board. Basically they don't like to get cold; they like to dry out between waterings; and they accept more drying in the winter if it's cool.

Thanks! I will let it dry out between waterings. Will temperatures down to 70 F or so in winter likely be OK?

Mine survived nighttime temperatures as low as 4°C over Xmas and New Year. "Survived" being the operative word, though - they really didn't like it much, and I seriously doubt I'll see blooms off them this year. That is, except for the biggest of the bunch, which really didn't seem bothered at all.

Some Dendrobiums prefer 4C winter nights. This kind doesn't, as mexicowpants noted. There are all sorts of Dendrobiums.

Mine tolerate night time temps down to 55F in the winter. Do not let them dry out while in active growth.

A beautiful bloom and nice color! I'm going to use your expression from now on " I accidentally bought an orchid", I love it!

Is "active growth" new leaves or visible new roots? Currently it has blooms, but I don't think any of the rest.

Mysteriously, these accidents seem to happen frequently when I go to places with orchids for sale.....
