It is a French hybrid.
The flowers were at least 4" or more in dia.
That may be idealized in my mind, lets say at least 3" in dia.
It was a very vigorous plant.
It bloomed for 2 years straight without letup, then collapsed and died, but gave off a keiki that I gave to another orchid enthusiast.
I believe I had read that it was a 4X polyploid plant.
The hybrid's name contained a person's name.
No doubt that I'll recognize the name when I see it.
Anyone recognize this Phal and able to lay a name on it?

If you are absolutely certain that it's French, it's probably a hybrid registered by Vacherot and/or Lecoufle. They are the main (and most famous) orchid breeders in France. This evening I'll see what I can pull up on Orchidwiz. Was the person's name in it French or English?

I remember reading somewhere that it was a French hybrid.
Possibly its description from where I bought it.
[I do not remember where I purchased it other than online.]
Or maybe, something I read later.
The reference to its being 4X was something I read about online later.

It was not a one word name.
The part of its name that I said was a person's name may have been a place name.
But, there was something anomalous about it.
What?
I do not remember.
But, I think it was neither French or English.
The entire name may have had some English words.

The person's/place name - I keep visualizing it beginning with an "M".
Having said that, it'll probably be another letter altogether.
Every time I try to give a first letter, I'm invariably wrong.

I had a poster from late 70's from Shaffer's Tropical Gardens in California (out from business since 80's I think) and I remember a beautiful flower (but not with such many dots like yours) which name was Mistinguett, the French artist. Mistinguett was a cross made by Vacherot & Lecoufle in France. I hope it would help you to look for the ID. Or maybe your plant could be a hybrid from Mistinguett... or the flower that I remember from Shaffer's poster was a hybrid with Mistinguett, I can't remember very well...

Thanks for sharing such a great phal.

Mario

Thanks Sak_ikim_lol,
I know the feeling.
I find it very frustrating trying to remember thing but not being quite able to do so.
It's like the name is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't quite say it, or see it.

Mistinguett might be it, but I don't get the feeling it rings the bell for me.
Thanks

I would ask at Vacherot in the South of France, it looks like some MIVA hybrids (for Michel Vacherot).

Les Orchidées de Michel Vacherot

Else you can see for all the phal with a MIVA name on the RHS and search pictures…

I have one of those, and can say that Phal Pink Panther is much different from the mystery Phal. The blooms are thick and waxy, and the barring is more prononced.

You're correct camille.
It is not a Phal. Pink Panther.
I did a Google Image search for it.
It has barring not the freckling like the one I'm inquiring about.
It did look to be a thicker waxier type of flower.
The one I'm inquiring about has a lighter thinner consistency to it.
I have searched around for this off and on for a number of years now.
It is an older hybrid.
It may be next to impossible to ID now.
Every once in a while I get the bug and try to ID it again.
Even if I could ID it and locate one, the restrictions on bringing one into Hawai'i would be cost prohibitive.
I am a cheapskate!
But, it would be nice to finally put a name to it again.
Thanks folks.
