Is this flower an orchid?
Question Is this flower an orchid?

I have been given this flower and told that it is an orchid plant that grows in the soil. I am not sure if it really is an orchid, so I would be grateful if somebody can confirm me if it is or it is not an orchid.

Thanks in advance!

Not an orchid. Iris family... Walking Iris, genus Neomarica or Trimezia. Tropical or subtropical plants that do grow in soil.

It appears to have pistils and stamen on the flowers instead of a column, so it is not an orchid. But Irises are closely related to the orchids.

take a look at the flower parts. Looks closely whether the flower you're interested on having these parts, especially the column and lip.

I've heard that orchids are differentiated based on the lip/labellum section. Thus if you see two different orchid plants with different colors, but they have same lip/labellum structure, most likely they're from the same genera, or even same species.

therefore, look for this lip/labellum structure if you wanna differ orchid with every other plants. I've read that there are more than 800 orchid generas accepted nowadays. So yeah, they might around us somehow without knowing it.

Iris have 3 stamen. Orchids have a column. If it does not have a column, it isn't an orchid. Iris are monocots, so are orchids. Some are easily confused.

Exactly, an iris. Iridaceae are monoctyledons as well. No need to get worried, it is a nice plant with lovely flowers.
