Default What is this Australian Orchid?

Hi all! I have a friend from Kingaroy Queensland (AU) that has this amazing specimen growing on a stump on his property. It flowers during their summer season. Can anyone identify it?

Thanks!
Becky

As I also wrote on FB, the flowers look suspiciously similar to so called Aussie type Dens (Den speciosum has that shape and bloom habit for instance). Do you know if this is a naturally occuring orchid, or if it was put there by someone. Helps to narrow down if it's more likely a species or not. But I don't think the leaves are Den though....

Cymbidium? Gin says not because of the leaves, but on Orchidwiz there are aussie cyms with similar leaves.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a den but the leaves sure don't

I don't think that this is an Australian native orchid. If it is a Cymbidium, the only native Cymbidium I know of is C. madidum and it definitely is not that. Nor does it look like any of the native Dendrobiums and I agree that the leaves do not appear to be from that genus. Some clear pictures of the plant and the lip would be helpful.

We have quite a few lovely native cyms here and they are all quite similiar to canaliculatum. madidum is similiar but with a more robust leaf type and the one I mostly grow is suave which grows long 'snakes' of leaves rather than the more common basal pseudobulb.

If you were to see them in real life you would see that the flowers are very much a miniature version of the larger more showy flowers you see on the bigger cyms. That said while the flowers may be small the plants more than make up for it with quantity. My suave had 22 flower spikes this year

Yes, one of the Cym. canaliculatum varieties. The other native cyms are madidum & suave.
