NOID oncidium... related to sharry baby?
So I got this oncidium from Trader Joe's...
It smells alot like sharry baby.. but much more vanilla. The scent is extremely strong.. much like my sharry baby.
The flowers are a strong magenta... compared to these my sharry baby looks red and brown. The flowers are of similar shape but these ones are about half the size of my sharry baby.... the plant however is around six or eight inches taller than my sharry baby.
The flower spikes match the size of the flowers and are half the size of my sharry baby...
As you can see this plant very much reminds me of smaller, more magenta, vanilla scented sharry baby..
Sizeable plant and four spikes! Two of which haven't even opened yet....
Exciting...
Sorry for the bad pictures...

Well, any Oncidium could be said to be related to another. And might very likely resemble another.
There are also a few varying cultivars of Sharry Baby (varying coloration, fragrance) . Also temps while buds are developing can affect the coloring - my 'Sweet Fragrance' cultivar has brownish burgundy bloom with a white lip when buds develop in warm temps, but are more vivid purplish burgundy with fucshia-y lips when buds developed in cool temps.

I would bet it is this Onc. Heaven Scent (Onc. Sharry Baby x Mtdm. Ruffles)

Yep quite possibly Sharry Baby, Heaven Scent or something else: too many similar plants that bloom differently in different conditions to get a 100% id.

Not sharry baby... I know..
But it does indeed remind me of one.
Pretty NOID regardless.

I noticed that too... my sharry baby (I don't know the cultivar, was simple labeled sharry baby) normally has a white lip... but depending on the temp can develop fuchsia dot right in the center of the lip.. or the lip can go completely fuchsia with a white edge.
I found it very interesting.

great buy! I bought the same one last week in TJ's for $12.99 and it only has two spikes. It is a very dark, deep color with a lighter shade at the bottom
