Yeah, I'm not so sure about this "Salu Gold Star x Chih Shang's Stripes" cross either. The only reference I could find to it was on what looked to be a Russian website but with no picture. Have you been able to google any pictures of it?

PCgeekchick, where did you get yours and the name? It looks to me like it's also a Baldan's Kaleidoscope.

I'm taking a second shot at a photo of mine.

My Canon G7 doesn't always have the most accurate color so I'm switching to a Nikon D200 which usually does -

Same bloom, better color...

N_O_R -
AM/AOS is the American Orchid Society's Award of Merit and is given a score according to a specific criteria.
Peloric, as in the OB glossary is
"A term used to describe an unusual condition where all three petals (instead of just one) have developed to mimic the Labellum in shape and/or color.

Coined by Darwin to describe a mutant flower that has many planes of reflectional symmetry."

Sometimes, like in your first photo, the peloric development is partial . I find your Kaliedescope's partial more impressive than the full.

Your plant may send off pelorics for a time and eventually stop and produce normal looking blooms.
Nature is fascinating

D & S - I don't mean to burst your bubble but try as you are - if it's not labeled - it's a NOID
I, for one know NOIDs are among the most loved orchids

Neat! I'm guessing it's not AM/AOS because I would probably know?

D&S Mabel, I still think yours is a Baldan's Kaleidoscope...

I got mine from a grower friend in Alaska, who I believe sources from Toyko. It's a very nice bloomer & gets nice comments from non-orchid friends. Good luck with your ID.

Dorothy and All -

It's perfect as a NOID for me as well!

It seems that the more I am at this orchid thing, the more I am attracted to plants that I already have. Over the last 12 years, I have bought the same plant on three occasions, and three others twice each as well!!! What can I tell you, I like my taste! I didn't realize the duplicates until I decided to catalog all my plants (around 185 at the moment).

From this experience, I've learned that I need to take a list of what I own with me when going orchid shopping so that I might cut down on buying the same ones again and again!!!

Naming the NOID is for reference for me but it's also fun to speculate!

Now that I can call this one like either a Salu Gold Star x Chih Shang's Stripes or a Baldan's Kaleidescope, it will help me to remember what it is and I can move on to trying to identify the other 64 NOIDs I have!!

... unless someone else comes up with another possible ID!

OMG 64 NOIDs!
Funny how certain ones catch your eye over and over -
I have started to go into other genera as I have surfed the web (especially for the project 4 plant) and have found some that I am now delving into. Take a look at the galleries here - you might find your eye drifting toward other orchids

AM/AOS means an award of merit was granted by the American Orchid Society. This is a flower quality award. Not all flowers that look like Baldan's Kaleidoscope are Baldan's Kaleidpscope. Unless you know the parentage for sure, call it a NO ID.

I have a lot of NO ID plants in my collection and I'm pretty proud of them, including a Baldan's Kaleidoscope look-alike. I will not, however, call this NO ID something that it is not unless I can prove it. I'll simply enjoy it as NO ID.
