I have got Z. Mackii in flower at the moment. the scent can be a little overpowering sometimes ,but I enjoy the smell it can fill a room very quickly .
Its a cymbidium compatible with the exception that it does not enjoy its leaves to be wet if there is a temperature drop ,so water early in the day in order for the leaves to dry out or you will get spotting on the leaves. The root system, however, must always be moist. In the Summer months I let mine stand in a saucer of water as you can damage the root system if it dries out too much.

Thank you so much for the info on care. I will definitely be watering mine more often. I'm in California so we don't have a lot of humidity.

Any more tips on how to care for my new orchid would be wonderful.

Thanks again!
Kristen

This is probably a Zygoneria which is a crossing of Zygopetalum x Neogardineria. This website will show you a few examples, just go to the Contents page and click on Zygoneria.

Zygoneria or Woodwardara ... leaves are deceiving. I've seen this flower before quite recently but can't remember where. Will be nice to put the right name on it so we can ask for it at the nursery.

I was going to suggest a Zygoneria as well, Good call Roy!! Maybe Zygoneria Adelaide Meadows 'Braeburn'?

cneos 06-25-2009 10:28 PM

'Braeburn' received an AM/AOS (80 points), description herein: Five flat flowers on one strong, upright inflorescence; sepals and petals light olive green with maroon blotches; lip white with velvety rich purple overlay basally, white on edge and light purple spots centrally; column maroon with yellow-green anther cap; substance hard; texture matte.
Wouldn't you know, there is no photo on this. Still, I don't see light olive green in the ?Zygoneria? or any of the other awarded Adelaide Meadows.
Is there ANY information available that might narrow down the plant's name from the grower from whom this plant was purchased?

I got this orchid from Trader Joe's. It didn't come with a tag or any other form of identification. I noticed earlier in the week that they received more of this particular orchid so I went back tonight to check if the plastic around it had the growers name but it did not. A bit of a dead end...

So go ask the store manager who supplied it, and ask them!

If you get an argument from the store manager about revealing his supplier, just ask him if he would sell unlabeled food?

When I buy plants, I try to buy ones with traceable ancestry. Knowing a plant's parentage often gives you hints to its care requirements too. I tend to go overboard when it comes to plant names. Although my research seems like a wild goose chase, Oh, the excitement when you get a proper ID and an AOS award is made official!

BTW, I have my share of Nonames that are just as beautiful as those that are identified.
