if I saw those phals, I would have to have them. recently our Walmarts had a sale on them for under $7.
I bought 3 and had to restrain myself from getting a forth one.

I'm glad I'm not alone! I like huge flowers, bold patterns and bright colours!! Hybrid phals seem to tick all my boxes one way or another! I think if I had enough light of get vandas as they remind me of phals a bit! I'd love to see some of your supermarket/DIY store/garden centre impulse buys everyone!

Vandas are closely related to phals and can be hybridized with them. I move mine around to give them enough light. I also use some artificial light for the winter. I have them outside quite a bit during summer but this year some nasty earwigs ate most of my buds! I love the big flowers and bold patterns too.

One of my biggest, and one of my smallest!

And this is a couple of snaps of two Vanda's I really loved from the botanical gardens in Edinburgh. Drool!

They are beautiful, no wonder you can't resist them.

If I went to the local orchid vendors complex, I usually can pass on many orchids with the mantra: "you live in an apartment, if you buy that, next Sunday you will have to wake up at 5am and drive 1.5hours to the villa just to drop it off..."

That mantra failed me during fairs (which usually run for a month here), because many vendors usually bring rarely offered plants... Then my mantra change into: "check if the plant is healthy, if the roots not actively growing, don't buy it", or "walk around for a while, if you returned and it wasn't there anymore, it not meant to be yours", often that works, but having said that, at the end of fairs, I woke up at 5 drive 1.5hours to drop off about 20+plants

Phals and Vanda's are my favorite too! Their foliage is very different but roots and petals are very similar! I love how they both have large flowers. I like my Noid Phals just as much as my primary hybrids from big leaf though!

Nice collection so far, those Vanda's are lovely! Sure you don't have enough light if you add in supplement lighting?

I think you could grow vandas. If we can in Canada, you should be able to. Where we are, our winters are very dark and rainy. I have one vanda near a florescent floor lamp in the living room while it blooms and 3 in a South window with a little extra lighting. Before I got the light I would just move them from window to window.

All nice, I have that same problem where I keep telling myself no more, but still have more follow me home.
