Question, I have a phal schilleriana "pink butterfly", I have had for a year now. It was potted in a peatmoss based potting mixture. It has now gotten a white cast on it and I would like to pot it in the regular phal potting mixture. Would that be fine or should it go back to the peatmoss baseed mixture. It is growing nicely and has healthly roots. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi
I have 2 -one in regular Bark and one in Coco husk
both are doing fine. I do think they need more Air on the Roots. I dont use Peatmoss on any of my Orchids.Hope this helps.
I've seen good specimens grown in a fine mix like peat moss or sphagnum but it doesn't work well for me. I find phals easier to manage in a more open mix of bark or coconut husk chips. I think that's especially true of species. They like plenty of air to their roots.
You can grow Phals extremely well in sphagnum moss but it requires careful control and attention to how plants are potted, watered and fed. Most don't end up wanting to be quite this careful, but the rewards can be great if you are.
