Hi Gwen - I've only had my unicum since last fall when it arrived with a few open blooms. There are 7 leafless canes and one new one with leaves. The tallest (old) one measured 3.5 inches and not a one has any sign of nubbins. Maybe this is because it was blooming in the fall? Anyway, during the winter, it got a lot less water - maybe once every 7-10 days. It's in a small clay pot with fir bark and drains very quickly. When I saw signs of new growth (and for a while there I thought it was a goner), I began to water more frequently, just as I have most of the other orchids. I also fertilize regularly and, seeing some of the other hints here, have moved it to a little brighter position. The sun room I have all the orchids in gets a good 10 degree drop in temp each night. Like the rest of you, I will wait to see how this little guy performs. - Lynn

One thing funny I read at Andy's orchids about the unicum is that if you think it's dead, it's probably not.

After reading through all the posts, this is what my comment was going to be!!!

I recently got a new unicum because I managed to kill my first one ...being the optimist that I am, I held on to that plant because I kept remembering that comment from Andy's. One day, my good friend LauraN stopped by and when I explained to her why I was keeping such a dead-looking plant, she gave me "the look"...and said "No Sue...that's DEAD!" Imagine my shock!!!

The pictures that you all are posting are the only unicums I've ever seen! So I am just taking note of the differences.
Me too! (And of course the photos at Jay's and at the vendor site where I ordered mine...)

I tried to get some better photos. Here is the smaller, leafless cane - you can see the buds are more developed and there look to be multiple flowers per flower stalk:Den. Unicum: FIVE nubbins-den_unicum_smaller-jpg

And here is the larger cane, still with leaves at the top, but the growths are hardly more than nubbins, so I won't know how they are going to turn out for some time...

Default Controversial Unicum returns!

Just a little progress pic on my bald Unicum. When I saw it today I about died laughing! It lookks like it wants to say "Quack! Quack!"
