Dendrobiums that need a rest period

Andrew, your Dockrillia linguiforme looks just great, like you grow it in a lot of light. Most of the ones I see for sale are grown in a lot of shade, and I would guess it's hard to accustom them to bright light?

Thanks! But I actually try to give it some shade in my backyard, otherwise it will fry under the hot LA sun. It is hung against a north east facing wall, not really receiving any direct sun, but what is surpising is how dry it can take.
Now I am soaking it along with my Vandas, and it is growing many more new leaves. We will see what it does come this spring.

Thanks ula, that table is very helpful. Based on that table, it seems as though my Den Chryseum is most likely a pedilonum type dendrobium rather than a Callista since it has long canes (no pseudobulbs) that flowers on the canes once the leaves are gone. I haven't had it long enough for it to flower but that seems to be the type it is closest to.

I am still a little confused with the winter rest thing. I have a kingianum, and 3 kingianum hybrids and an aggeratum, all of which I understand need a winter rest or at least a slow-down. The thing is, all of them are putting up new growths now, so when do I start the slowing down ? When temps drop, or when growths are mature ? Do you need to keep watering as long as they are growing ?

I would keep watering and try to keep them warm. If you restrict water the new growth will die.

My aggeratum and my farmeri are both putting up growths as well. Not to worry, new growths on these plants mature very fast. They have a growth burst usually in the fall, and usually by thanks giving the growths will mature. You can water less by then and start to lower the temperature, won't be too late

Dendrobiums are so varied and interesting, you need to study them a bit to give them the best conditions... I have new latourias purchased from Ecuagenera at the Montreal Orchidfête last weekend, hope I can give them what they need.
