Dendrobium auriculatum Male
Default Dendrobium auriculatum

Following the hot trend of Dendrobium species, I bought this little bugger that I fancied because of the foliage. Who needs that lucky bamboo stuff when you can have an orchid that kinda-sorta looks like bamboo AND FLOWERS!

And for you fragrance junkies out there, it faintly reminds me of briny ocean; the smell of a really fresh oyster if you've had one. Not fishy, but briny. It's only been a day, so I'll have to update on it in peak of flower-i-ness.

CAUTION: Image heavy.

Your Dendrobium is very pretty. I love the pictures you took of it. No it was not to many pictures at all. We love to see every ones orchids here on the board. The more pictures you have the better in my book...

Great species! Looks very elegant. Thanks for the scent description, too.

It's fast becoming one of my favorites. It didn't do much when I first got it in May, I think it was growing it's roots out, WHICH are actually thicker than the stems. Pretty weird looking. The bud came a little later after I stuck it with my catts. Hopefully with my new lights I can get it to grow/bloom more, heard these guys are ever growers and bloomers.

Well if it keeps blooming all the time for you let me know. I just might have to pick on up also. Also wonder how long it stays flowering.

Good questions that only time will tell. I know for sure that mine is a small, baby plant. From my tireless research on how to grow it, there are pictures of people with 2-3 foot canes or longer that flower at the internodes as well as the tips. I only have one mature flower-able cane, so if this one bloom says anything, it's that the den is quick to mature! At the moment I have 3 active growths with 2 or so just starting, so maybe more in the future!

More weirdness on my end. I was observing it throughout the day yesterday and the bloom started to close up as time passed. I was thinking that maybe it was one of those plants the bloomed for a very short time like a vanilla or sobralia, butttt to my surprise it was open again this morning!

I just got one of these earlier this spring too!

The vendor had a blooming sample plant and I couldn't resist. His plant wasn't more than 10" and he said he's never seen one more than 12-15" but he'd heard they can grow taller. Hopefully mine doesn't.

Update: The flower has begun to go on its merry way. Let this be a formal record of this flower lasting approximately 2 weeks (14 days tomorrow). Another flower bud is emerging on the matured, no leaf, 2-inch tall cane, so that can be a reference point for blooming! Also, 3 new leads are forming but growing slowly and the roots are just crazy right now.
