D. Formosae: winter rest?

Does D. Formosae need winter rest?

My hybrid 'Lori's star' currently has some yellowing leaves, I am wondering if it's due to low humidity or it's normal to drop leaves in winter.

Hmm... I found this page http://www.clanorchids.com/culture/txt002.htm which has a brief amount of info... says they are evergreen. But all plants shed old foliage ... Can you post pix?

Thanks for the reply and the link . I previously performed an extensive search on this matter but couldn't find anything...that link was helpful. If it's supposed to be an evergreen Den., then yellowing of the leaves is most possibly due to my low humidity.

Most of the dropped leaves were from bottom of older canes. I got the plant about 3 months ago. Roots are still actively growing, indoor with artificial lighting (6500k) at ~1000fc, 12hours/day. Temp. maintained at 65F. Recently, the humidity has dropped to 30%.

Have you reported this Dendrobium since you got it? If so, what did the roots look like on the inside of the pot? I think the plastic container it is in right now might be a size too big. If you haven't repotted it yet, you might want to do that. Sometimes vendors overpot orchids to get more $ for larger pots. Last year I bought a Dendrobium and had to repot it three sizes down.

Hi Jane,

I haven't repot the Den since I got it back in the end of August. Since we were approaching fall/winter and acclimating the Den to my new environment will take another month, I decided to repot it next spring instead.

The roots looks good on the edge and actively growing and the sphag-bark mix does not seem to be broken down.

I will keep in mind to pot it in the correct size next spring. Thanks!

They are Intermediate to cool year round growers, 50f to 60f at night, up to 85f during the day. No direct sun, bright filtered light. These will grow right next to the catts in much the same way. If its getting to hot during the day or dry, try misting and provide plenty of air circulation. Water and fertilize when its growing. Give a slight short rest (no water) when growth has completed its cycle . Just Keep barely moist until new growth starts again.
