Well I probably made a beginner mistake and bid on eBay and received a fairly large, dried up plant. I take full responsibility for not taking into account the weather we've been having. It arrived sooner than anticipated and totally beat up. It has a spike that was buried in the media and a pot too large for it. I'm hoping I can rescue it with a proper watering and a new pot. I think the roots are salvageable. It is still green with some sheen to it. What would you do?

Did you get it from overseas??

Usually shipping take less than one week within the US, and that does not cause such severe dehydration.
While plants are in transit, it does not matter how dry your local weather is because it travels inside the box.

Was the plant unstable in the box? Then it is the seller's fault.
Otherwise, it is possible that the rough handling in transit might have cause some jumbling around, but usually plant sellers do pretty good job with packing.

Oh, well.
If I were you, I would contact the seller and explain what happened, and then go from there.

After thinking about it I realize the plant has a very wide leaf span so I imagine packing it without damage would be difficult. However, I'm concerned about how dry it was after hearing how they don't like to dry out. I hope I was able to rehydrate it in time.

I didn't purchase it from overseas but across country. The shipping was only two days long. I contacted the seller who told me they purposely ship them rather dry.

Oh well, live and learn.

Don't worry about the fact that it arrived dry. The seller was correct when he told you that they normally ship them dry. There's less chance of rot in transit if they're shipped dry. And yes, the large, strap leaved varieties are difficult to package without damage to the leaves.

I'm so new to this genus I really rely a lot on posts I read, books and magazines I've accumulated. Since this genus doesn't have a way to store water I worried. It's not very pretty but has recovered.
