Paphiopedilum Honey Male
Default Paphiopedilum Honey

Hi everyone,

I believe this plant is Paphiopedilum Honey, but the tag say "Paph. Honei". If anyone who is familiar with Paphiopedilum Honey please let me know what you think about this plant. Is it really Paphiopedilum Honey? Or is it a mislabeled plant?

Thanks,

David.

I'm not familiar with this, and yours doesn't look exactly like pics I can find (for example this one Paphiopedilum Paph. Honey) BUT I still think it COULD be.

Paph Honey is philippinense x primulum.

Yours seems to show more of the philippinense parent than shown shown in the Paph Honey in the above link. For example yours has more 'twiddly' petals which it would get from philippinense and it has a longer more pointed pouch, again a feature it would get from philippinense.

Variations between different batches of seed, or even different seedlings from the same batch are expected and normal (just think of people, children of two parents don't look identical, I'm brunet, my sister is blond for example).

I would guess that the tag was just mis-copied by someone used to spelling Honey differently. It's very easy to do when copying tags.

Hey Rosie!

Thanks for your response. I have found some pics of Paphiopedilum Honey and some of its hybrids. I am going to send you the links. Please let me know what you think. I have blond hair too. Google Image Result for http://fairegarden.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/september-19-2008-004.jpg

Here is one Paph. Honey. I think that this one is somewhat similar to mine. I am beginning to feel better, because this is orchid has multiple blooms, which I like. http://www.nhorchids.org/images_show.../PaphHoney.JPG

Yeah, that last one looks much more like yours.

I think you are safe to assume that's what yours is, it's so easy for someone to copy a tag incorrectly. Lets say they have a female relative called Honei and so they are used to that spelling... it can they be very easy to read Honey and write Honei.

David --

We had a Paph Honey bloom a few months ago, and yours is a match! Ours was multifloral, I hope yours is too!

Since most Paphs are grown from seed not cloned there will be a lot of variation even among sibs. The twirlies (petals) continue to grow and twist even after the flower is fully open. I have a philippinese cross that does that. I think yours is labeled correctly though misspelled.
