Are you not meant to put your cyms outside UNTIL the frosts come? All the cym grows that I know do it that way to initiate the spikes.

That is what I have always done. I brought them in the end of October but for some reason they didn't bloom this year. I told my neighbour who left hers outside all winter is that the idea is to give them a good chilling then bring them in so that they bloom during the winter.
When I have put mine out early in the spring, they often put out more spikes.
