Sounds like it might have been an inside job, maybe.
Please let us know if the person was caught.

I have a simple theft solution here in the "boonies." I keep a pair of geese that are allowed to free range--they KNOW what belongs around the house (though they're not fond of the cats and will chase them) and what doesn't. Absolutely fearless birds, and pretty scary when they come running at you with heads low (and hissing) and wings outstretched. Oh, and once they get hold of you? Well, they bite, and they will hit you with their wings (it HURTS).

IMO they are far scarier than either of our (rather large) dogs....they've also chased off possums and raccoons that wanted to have chicken or duck for dinner....

Geese would be scary. I had a pair of ducks as a child that drove off a pair of Dobermans. Ducks and geese can be very territorial. Your orchids are definitely safe.

Geese will eat tender plants, so I make sure that the orchids are up on where they can't reach them--either on the porch or hanging from the trees. They are a great early warning system since they will honk and carry on any time there's anything amiss day or night.

Pity we live in a world where we have to employ "watchgeese" and other guardians to keep our orchids safe.....

From what I was told, these plants were removed from the show area, not from the sales area. Despite precautions taken at the exits from the sales area by the POE show committee, these are small plants which I suspect could easily have been tucked inside a jacket pocket or most certainly in a small back-pak.

That ticks me off. Its crap, it males it to where everything has to be 20 xs harder for everyone else. I have never been so thankful to live out in the boonies where people would not know an orchid from a hibiscus from walmart. also for having a big dog who has a bark that could wake the dead. He also catches and kills armadillos so I dont wven wanna contemplate his bite strengrh. I hope everyone gets to keep all their babies safe and sound this year.

Im telling you those are the meanest suckers. We had one when I was little and my big brother and sister had to walk me to the car because he would attack me the minute I walked out.

From my experience its often really sweet looking little old ladies stealing things or switching price tags at sales. Makes it hard to get all hostile at them, and they know it.

I do not know if the stolen plants were variegated forms or highly colored forms but there are obviously people attending this show in San Francisco who will take whatever steps necessary to illegally obtain a valued cultivar of this species.
