Unfortunately there will always be those scum who have no qualms about stealing or destroying what belongs to others. The worst ones are those who don't see what the big deal is -- you have something they wanted so why shouldn't they take it.

That's AWEFUL! We live way out in the country but we have a neighbor within seeing distance that we do not trust. They almost stole my parrot from inside our house while we went on a 5 minute errand. Lock everything up now... :-/

I have gardened as a volunteer in a public garden for 24 years now. All plants, supplies, etc. are purchased by the volunteers through fund raising or personal money. Having stuff stolen is just part of the job description. I started doing the greenhouse about 3 years ago. Had to put locking doors on the orchid cases this summer (a compot of 'yellow bird' I was doing as a club challenge project walked off. I am so mad). My weirdest story is a Trader Joes Maudiae paph that was stolen three years ago. No huge loss. This summer it reappeared - minus roots! I am nursing it back to health. A thief who is afraid to commit murder.

Hello everyone! When the first time I moved to France, coz I love flowers and my husband too,,,Our geraniums grow very well and some friends and our family asked the babies, It was why I planted many pots of little geraniums which grew very well and gave some flowers. We wanted to give to our friends and family,,there were around 8 pots that I put in a basket under the mailbox,,,suddenly the next day,,all were missing. Well,,,the basket was still there, only the pots and geraniums were gone. We thought of having a camera after that. Well,,,,thives are thives. They will steal away even cheap plants anywhere they can,I think.

At the Pacific Orchid Expo (POE) in San Francisco last weekend, thieves struck again removing two Cym. goeringii species plants from a vendor's display. They had taken two from this same vendor's sales booth and another two from the display last year. All goeringiis. In an attempt to thwart the problem, surveillance cameras were installed over the display this year and hopefully will show the theft.
The show committee, in order to avoid another theft and for its protection, removed the Cym. goeringii which had gone Best Cymbidium in Show but was in another display, from the show. Sad, sad state of affairs at this show.

We were giving out orchids to those who became members at our show last year and, after the show, the remaining ones were stolen. I think that is why we won't be giving out the orchids this year, unless someone has a change of heart. Sigh.
Sorry to hear of the cyms. I just can't believe people don't feel guilty about this. Mot plant people are so nice that when these things happen, you think the people must have gone bonkers. I hope the camera reveals the criminal for you. More and more, people are resorting to hidden cameras everywhere and while some people lament their use, it is these incidents that make them necessary.

Someone stole geraniums? Here, someone was digging up ornamental grasses from parks and yards. Say what?

Compared 35€ cymbidium and only 3€ geranium,,Well... But indeed,,a thief is always a thief, even only for ornamental grass.

Sad to say but this has happened in China several times; the thieves hit some orchid nurseries and only took the prized plants. All the green houses on the university has 24 hour surveillance cameras and a night guard.

I hadn't heard about the POE thefts. The exit door people were pretty diligent about the dot stickers (do other shows do this?) The thieves must have access to the dots (not difficult to fake, I guess).
