I do grow many orchids outside - some have a known cold tolerance, others I just took a chance and was happily surprised!
I'm in the SF Bay area - San Jose, zone 9. Summer days are dry, and very warm - hot - tho it always cools quite a bit at night (as well as air becoming moister). Winter days usually have mild, cool (by orchid standards) temps, winter nights are usually upper 30s-mid 40s - but there are always a few nights that get colder.
So, this gets temps ranging from occasional highs of upper 90s-low 100s for short periods, shaded by late morning - noon, nights are usually upper 50s (unless it's been extremely hot, but still usually not more than 70 over night); to occasional lows to about freezing, again for short periods, sheltered from frost freeze, and even rain (cold, wet orchids generally don't fare well, if they're not cymbidiums). If there's a chance of freeze, I push the orchids as close to the house as possible (they are kept under the porch overhang to protect from weather as much as possible - porch also has some wind protection from the sides). Plants with buds go into the garage, to be extra safe
So, it seems this can take some extremes in temps for short periods, if sheltered from the most extreme. The foliage suffers from the dryness, but the plant grows and blooms well.
