Sophronitis cernua: new blossoms, different types? Male
Default Sophronitis cernua: new blossoms, different types?

First bloom of a S. (C.) cernua I've had for 2 years. The 10 flowers are orange, about 0.5 in.

This plant has robust heavy green leaves, with a muscular look as seen in the first photo. I have 2 other cernuas, in the second photo. One is like the plant in bloom, but the other one is very different: smaller, greyer leaves, with a green midrib. I haven't been able to bloom either of the plants in the second photo. All are mounted, outside in SoCal, watered/sprayed daily with weak fertilizer.

Can anyone educate me about the different cernuas?

I think culture makes a difference too. My cernua bloomed regularly with 2-3 blooms. Leaves were smaller than those I had seen at shows with 7-10 blooms. I thought that there were better cultivars available. Undoubtedly there are, but I have increased the bloom count on mine to 5-7 blooms, 2-3 times a year with a regular fertilizer schedule, more light and a quick dry of roots by mounting the plant. Leaves are about 25% bigger too.
