New growth - most Catt alliance bloom from the top of the new pbulb.

Many get a "sheath" that is a modified leaf, that will become visible inside the newly developing leaf as it grows and unfolds. Spike and buds will develop a bit inside the sheath if the plant will be blooming. Some, the buds start inside the green sheath; others after the sheath has browned and dried.

Catts that don't get a sheath, buds usually become visible as the new leaf grows and unfolds.

(Some hybrids may bloom with or without a sheath on the same plant)


I don't grow this species, so cannot say what the bloom habit is, sorry. Hopefully someone else knows more about the species.

I agree its a growth. Keep looking as the spike will come from inside that leaf if it is going to bloom. I have 2 of these and I did get the one I've had the longest to bloom last fall. I think it did not come from a sheath. If I remember correctly. Keep us posted, as I love this one.

Oops, I just looked again and I don't have this one mine are cernua. Sorry about that. I only have some mini Catt's that have this one in there back ground. But it will still come from inside the leaf.

I've had this guy for two months now and my god, the amount of new root growth is huge
It likes how I'm treating it: mostly ignoring it, no fertilizer, south window, daily waterings from everytime the shower is used. The roots are going crazy

I have two c. nobilors that keep falling over, do I need to repot them? They are huge.

Most people repot Cattleyas when they grow out of the pot. They are often top heavy. You can also grow nobilior mounted. I have read and been told that when mounted they should be positioned so they grow horizontally, not vertically.

The're growing horizontally out of their pots and tipping over, those nutcases of orchids.

Then it's time to repot, if they're also making new roots.
