Sheath blast
all, I have a catt. that has several sheaths the oldest one has turned brown while a newer one has sent out a spike. Would to much water cause the first one to blast? I hope to keep this from happening again.

The bud inside the brown one may not be done. Just watch it to be sure.

Dave, I recently had a sheath turn brown like that with a bud inside. I removed the sheath carefully and that bud continues to grow.

Dave, I have a C.Viola Sanjume that does that all the time. The sheath on the last growth turns brown, it puts out a new growth, and then both the old and new growths bloom at the same time. It has done this for the fifteen or so years I've had it.

It looked a lot healthier and plump a couple weeks ago. I will peel back the sheath and see. I don't hold out much hope. Thanks everyone

I would look inside the sheath to see if the buds are still viable. I had a skinneri that blasted the sheath and buds inside. The rot then worked its way down the plant and almost killed it. Hopefully its just a Catt being tempermental, but definetely keep an eye on it.

Dying sheaths don't really mean it's gone... I had a dead sheath but a bud still grew from it...

My catt. looks very similiar to yours Dave. Out of the green sheath I have 5 flower buds, the brown one now has 3 flower buds. I thought it dead also but what a nice surprise!

I just always cut the top of the brown sheath and look inside to see how the buds are doing. Lots of times the sheath will be brown yet the buds are developing just fine.
Happy Growing!

I also had sheaths turn brown while the buds were basically trapped. I would open and find out.
