Some varieties of C. mossiae Male
Default Some varieties of C. mossiae

The flowering season for C. mossiae is over now. Besides its richness of flowering C. mossiae features a wonderful fragrance. But because of the long rest period growing is not so easy. Plants exhausted from flowering can become more stressed during hot and dry summers. The plants start growing only in late summer, this is when they tolerate repotting.
#1 and #2 are tipo, main colour varieties.
#3 is a coerulea.
#4 - #6 is a semialba 'Reineckiana'. As you can see, the pristine white flowers develop brown streaks after two weeks, indicating a suspected CymMV infection.

At least the new leaves look healthy, but that doesn't mean nothing. Happily I have a second plant, that flowered without symptoms when withering.

my 2 cents.

use test strips to test those plants, and discard any plant that is infected (burn it).

cattleyas attracts many insects that will pass the virus from one sick plant to the others (healthy).

regarding viral infections I know of a few sellers who tell you the plant has tested positive for CymMV. They are catt species/clones divisions from the early 1900 to the mid 1950's. CymMV is very well known to them and these people aren't trashin these but selling divisions of some of them for over 1000 USD American dollars for 4 bulbs with a new lead. So my take is that people like Waldor orchids can live with CymMV in some of their oldest plants and get big bucks for them why would a simple hobby grower such as myself worry. I don't anymore.

so if someone "important" (for some) is doing something wrong, it makes it ok for the others to do the same? i am sorry but what kind of logic is that?

i am one who will never buy virused plants, and will simple destroy or try to destroy the reputation of any seller for selling (knowingly) infected plants to customers (unless it is told that the plant is infected)

i have spotted plants with virus before entering my collection, and they simple got destroyed by me, also got reimbursed, after sending the tests to their original owner.

i am quite sure that most people out there will never buy a plant knowing it is infected, am i wrong?

i am truly sorry but i completely disagree with your logic.

Antonio.
