...one question if you don't mind? How do u know when a sheath isn't going to produce a spike? I have a couple B nodosas that have a few sheaths, and a Bc. Yellow Bird that has a few as well... I bought them this way (bag babies) and am not so familiar with these types... (the yellow bird has huge ones, they r large & hanging out, and the nodosas are still small, and tucked away inside the fold of the leaves & the dried "husk" P'bulb covering - don't ya love my technical terms?) ...Lol, or should I start my own thread?

I wouldn't mind if you had two questions.
Well, I only have two Brassavola hybrids, but with my limites experience of them and cattleya hybrids, generally sheaths that are much smaller than usual will be non-flowering. For the most part, new growths will either have no sheath at all, or "regular" sheath that will make flower(s).
Some will stay empty until right time for flowering comes while others will grow buds inside the sheath as soon as the sheath is big enough.
I think the most important thing at this time is good watering. I think I could have seen flowers earlier this year on both my brassavola bybrids if I watered them enough. They just dried up and died.
Now I am really up on watering them to make sure buds will develop.
