Epi. Max Valley 'Shirani'

Hey all,

This is my newest orchid baby. I was in the greenhouse looking for hibiscus, and well.... I couldn't just leave her there!!



Anyway. I'm not sure what the best way to go about caring for these kinds. So I was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints or suggestions.

I will also say there is a little new growth happening at the base of the plant, which can't be a bad thing

This should be in the Cattleya alliance, but I understand why you mistook it to be in the Dendrobium alliance because of the canes.

You may want to put this outdoors in the warmer months if you can....I have mine in direct sun out in the fire escape....they love to be watered. Feed it weekly weakly with fertilizer. But in winter water it only weekly; they tend to root rot indoors even if its in the south facing window....but then: we have different grow zones.

No way to grow outdoors, unfortunately. Does this mean I should let the pot dry out before watering?

I have a big bay window that faces south. So far all the plants I have like it there, so it has lots of company.

this plant will love the south facing window....yes, let it dry before watering....this plant can grow tall and before long in a couple of years you will have a forest. They like to keiki from the base and from the middle of the cane. Its up to you to trim it or let it grow wild and free.

These do like a fair amount of sun. I have understood that reed stem Epis should NOT dry out completely ... I have a small species with very slender canes and a bigger hybrid with thicker canes - I don't allow either to dry completely - just not soggy. That said, it may be fine to let them become dry before watering - but I wouldn't let them remain dry for too long ...
