Blc. Chia Lin 'Shinsu #1' AM/JOGA
I have been trying to get this to bloom for years! He's grown into a BIG guy, too! I'm a bit concerned about this plant growing to a size than can't be easily managed!
Its done a good job for its first flowering, and the bloom is ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL... it glitters in direct light, changes colors with the light source, and GLOWS many shades of purple and magenta as light passes through it! It also has a substance of thick velvet. The scent is of bubble gum toothpaste (not sure if I like it, but hey, nobody is perfect...! )Simply one of the most amazing cattleyas I have ever seen! EVERY GROWER NEEDS THIS PLANT!!! (its an easy one, too!) I'm so thrilled with it!!!

Absolutely Gorgeous!
How big is BIG? What did you do to finally get it to bloom? I have a Chia Lin 'New City' that I got at least a year ago from Paramount as BS' and it sat and did absolutely nothing for at least 6 months if not more. Finally I cut off a very old and shriveled Pseudobulb, thinking it was stealing energy and might get it to grow. That seemed to work and I have a new large ature Pb and leaf, but no sheath yet! The leaf has quite a lot of red pigment so it must be in optimum light.

Sounds like you are doing well with it! Mine was also a BS plant when I got it from Hausermann's 3 years ago!!! It has made growths with sheaths since then, each one bigger and BIGGER than the last. After a summer outside in North Carolina, it produced this one bloom... (It actually had 6 buds on 3 growths, but they blasted in the sheaths when I brought the plant inside). So, don't give up! Lots of light, warm temps, and water/food during the outdoor summer growing season... your's will get there! And when I say big... I mean HUGE! The plant is ready for a 10" pot this spring and stands about 2' tall and 2.5' wide. And this is only its FIRST flowering... YIKES!!!

Thanks for the info! YIKES is right! It better produce something if it expects to have that much growing area dedicated to it. I know mine is sprawly, the leaf out sideways and roots sprawling as well! A sign of things to come.
