Encyclia (Prosthechea) Cochleata
This little treasure is such a forgiving plant! It loves to be dry but will withstand almost all matters of neglect, as I found out the hard way. It is faintly fragrant in the late morning and all afternoon, but it smells kinda like manure to me! Its a strange smell. Anyways, besides the smell, I love this unique little orchid! On previous blooming it has only ever produced one spike at a time, but this time around it has 3!

Hi Daethen,
If it's growing sheaths it shouldn't take much to make it bloom. Maybe it needs increased light exposure or more hours of the exposure it's getting now...if that makes sense. My cochleata is growing outdoors and it's happy when grown in cattleya-like lighting conditions. It's growing directly behind a trellis facing south and it receives 3 hours of direct sunlight that is broken up by the trellis and then bright indirect sunlight until mid-afternoon.

Thanks, Junebug. I have it pretty close to a T8 2 bulb fixture. Can't wait for warmer weather so that I can take it outside. My first problem was that it wasn't getting enough water. Got that fixed, now just got to get the blooms. I will gradually get it out to bright light this summer.

Jonada, if you can, add another 2 bulb fixture right next to the 1st one. 4 bulbs are twice what 2 put out and, after all, Prosthechea IS a Cattleya ! I started with 2 bulb fixtures on every shelf and had a lot of no bloomers, when I brought someone with orchid knowledge in to evaluate my culture, the first thing she said was "not enough light". When I added 2 and 4 bulbs to all the 2 bulb fixtures it improved all the blooming from then until today, 7 years later !! I don't have "not enough light" blooming problems anymore, now it's the "cooler night" difference problems !!! Win some, lose some !!
