Default Cattleya skinneri

Beautiful and floriferous species from the Central America. Compared to an ordinary type, the clone 'Casa Luna' (bellow) looks to be a tetraploid.

Wow, gorgeous pics and flowers. My favourite is the 'caerulescens'. Just gorgoeus.

Gorgeous. Like Tindo I think the 'caerulescens' is my favourite.

How can you tell just from looking at the plant that it is tetraploid? Wouldn't you need to look at the chromosomes (probably during mitosis) to be sure?

I guess 4N's usually have rounder petals with heavier substance, and everything is bigger too.

I guess you'd need pretty tightly controlled environmental conditions to be sure it wasn't just an environmental effect. Or is it that obvious?

I guess for direct proof, one just need to count the chromosomes in the cell...So, it was just a guess.

Right. And chromosomes are usually invisible except during cell division, so tetraploidy could only be confirmed in the lab. I was just curious to know if there were established criteria to establish tetraploidy from orchid morphology.
