With the phal being younger, I'd see how you do with the sphag first- in a small container, you won't need to worry about it staying wet for too long. When it gets bigger in a few months, or next year, I'd graduate it to a dryer mix.
If you reeeaaallly want to repot it, maybe do your 50/50 mix on the lower half, and sphag on top.

And my Laelia- yup, like a lot of plants do, it got really leggy trying to search out more light.
You don't have to 'keep it compact', if it's getting enough light it will be fine and naturally compact on it's own. But if you really want to direct the lead closer to the main plant, try what I described above.

it seems SOAKED now. maybe i will squeeze out the spagh and then see what happens. i have spagh beds on top of most of my phals anyways. so i will probably do that

there are holes in the bottom, but i will probably poke holes in the sides. its about the size of a dixie cup, but it looks more like a shot glass lol

I poked a few holes all along the length of the plastic cup my tiny phal is in- it's the only plant in a pot that isn't vented. In that 1.5" pot, I just did three holes about halfway up.

I agree about the spagh. I have my Phal equestris seedlings in perlite, with a small layer of spagh on top to help with the humidity. I spray everyday, and water twice a week. I'll try to get pics of the larger compot.
