Default Cattleya forbesii var. punctata!!!

The species is well-known.
I got this on a trade as var. punctata. The person assured me it was a punctata! I confess you need a lot of good will to accept this as a spotted flower...!

I had forbesii var. punctata before, but unfortunately lost my plant and that's why I was in search for a new one. The second photo shows what I had and lost, a true punctata.

Not at all, Rosie! Not even close the same!

It simply started getting smaller and smaller, no matter what I did, and then one day already very small, dried and died!

Mauro, just a thought from a brain-dead frozen person... but could the way it has been grown, i.e., sun, food, etc affect the appearance of the flower? Or maybe you just need to take a better picture so we can see the spots on the first one better!!!!!

Doc, yours is a good question, but no, more sun, less sun, pH variations etc can affect the color hue, not the number of spots on the segments. This is a genetic controlled for sure. It is true that there may be a variation on how heavily spotted a flower can be from year to year, but again, normally this is not due to light or feeding practices but to genetic instabilities. During the last year this plant was grown hanging in a very bright place, right the way forbesiis like. If it had to be a punctata it would have shown all its potential under this condition (the plant is strong, the flowers well developed...).
I was thinking... maybe if I throw some sand in my eyes I can see more spots on it !!!

No, I have a much better idea... I'll come down there and for free I'll paint some blue spots on it and then you can take another picture and repost... just tell everybody that you got a new camera and what a difference....
