Default Pale rebloom? why

My Copper Queen purchased last year was a burnt orange. This year the bloom is a very pale yellow. The plant looks great and I actually had to seperate it into two since it kept growing out of the pot. Why the pale bloom? Suggestions?

They are both lovely, did you change light or fertilizer?

No change other than from the greenhouse to my house. All my orchids are growing well and the phals all rebloom the same as when purchased. This is my first cat to rebloom.

That could have been it. I have a Blc. Yellow Tang that bloomed dark yellowish orange on the buds that developed outside and the ones that developed inside and bloomed a couple of weeks were whitish yellow. So just that move could have done it.

Maree.
I think it's from blooming in the low light inside your house. Orchids will grow. Phals are lower light plants, so they will bloom ok. But cats need more light and the color of many cats will be lighter under less light. I've seen the same thing happen to a lot of cats, including Copper Queen. In brighter light, the color will intensify. The plant scientists out there can explain the process better. If the light is too bright and hot, then the flowers can easily fade out or even burn.

While they are not the only determining factors, light intensity, temperatures and the various combinations (high-high,high-low, low-high or lo-low) can have a profound effect on flower colors and color intensities.

Richard Mueller itself is an orange (like Copper Queen) with little red spots. The other parent could have been either 'Pizzaz', which has the brilliant red flares, or it could have been 'Robin', which has no flares. I suspect that your plant's parent was 'Robin' because 'Pizzaz' usually imparts more reddish coloring in the petals. The lips for both versions are usually red.
