Default Enc. mariae

I bought this one as a tiny division, so this is the first time it has bloomed for me. Only two flowers, but they are huge flowers for an Encyclia....like 4" in diameter, and the lip is almost 3" long! It is currently on display in my open air terarrium, in my living room. I built this cabinet specifically for the plants....and I guess it holds some other stuff pretty good, too.

It looks great Jasen! I've had this one on my list since I found it 2 projects ago. Didn't work out for the project plant, but I sure do like it!

Gorgeous, Jasen! I love this Encyclia. Been on my list for a little while. (Btw...My growing shelf is actually just one shelf in the middle of a big bookshelf. )

That is exceptionally large flower for this species. Are those actual measurements?

That was measurements by eye....actual measurements are 3 3/4" in diameter and the lip is 2 3/4".

Beautiful flower and I LOVE your open air terarrium. I need one of those. I have just the spot for it in my living room.

Hey there!

Beautiful mariae there... you must have a really fine clone: from the photos the form is excellent, and the size you quote is unusually large. I hope there is some way to make sure the clone (which you ought name) can be propagated. It would also be an excellent parent for hybridization. This has always been one of my very favorite species of orchid, period. (Along with its sister species E. citrina... I once had a beautiful clone of this latter, with wide tepals and an exceptionally large, frilly lip, which won an AM at the Manhattan Orchid Society in the 90s... and alas, I never made sure it was propagated, and it perished. Which is why I mention propagating yours!
Regards, gilfaethwy in Florida
