Default Epidendrum pseudonocturnum; revisited

This species is recorded from Esmeralda, Ecuador, and is often confused as an Epi. nocturum. My plant is a specimen, about 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall... the longest cane is about two and a half feet... the old stems keep blooming from the same, old, dead-looking inflorescence...

Epi. pseudonocturnum
was described by Hágsater & Dodson in 1993.

This plant has been in constant bloom since the summer, and has many more new growths, inflorescences, and buds coming. The flowers last two days, instead of the single day in Epi. nocturnum.

I find that this species has much larger flowers and longer canes than Epi. nocturnum, but Epi. pseudonocturnum does not compare in height to my Epi. tumuc-humaciense (Epi. nocturnum var. tumuc-hamaciense)...

Generally, I like the Epis, but more and more I find them leggy, needing of lots of space and not worth the effort (to me). The blossom with this one is beautiful, but only 2 days! I get months or years from a few of my Phals.

Some Epidendrum get very leggy... my Epi. nocturnum var. tumuc-humaciense is over 4 feet tall (hasn't even bloomed yet). But then there are little species that cling tightly to mounts, like Epi. porpax (can't think of the other nicer ones). Normally, on Epi. nocturnum, the flower lasts for hours (basically, one day). On this newer species from Ecuador, the flowers last 2 days. The flowers are pretty large though. Right now, they are kicking out flowers as large as my hand. In summer, they were a tad larger than Epi. nocturnum. The plus side is the perpetual blooming. There are alot of growths on this plant now, and when they all mature and bloom, I may have flowers everyday

That's so cool looking, stinks that you only get a few days of enjoyment.

That is pretty interesting... do you know the origins of 'Wesak'?
