That is so pretty! I love the color! I wish my Epidendrum NOID would hurry up and bloom. It's growing like mad, but I guess it's just not big enough yet for flowers. I'd be so happy if it looked as good as yours!

How big do they have to be to flower? I have one that Ross thinks is Epidendrum obriennianum and it is three feet plus with a foot long side shoot but still no flowers and I don't think it likes the fact that the dog knocked it over last week very much either! Our days are short and the light is low, is this a hindrance?

Hey Carol,

Your plant is a tetraploid hybrid derived from Epidendrum radicans. It is likely a meristemed clone. Try searching the websites of big Hawaiian growers (where most of these are grown commercially) like H & R and you might find a match. The tetraploids have shorter plants and longer-lasting flowers.

Hope that helps, Eric

Thank you Eric. The flowers do last a long time. It would really be fun to know what it is.

I checked out H&R, always a dangerous place for an orchidophile to hang out. None there. However, I googled Epidendrum Radicans and there were lots of them. The pics and descriptions were dead on. Blooms profusely from spring to fall etc. So If anyone wants one that is always blooming from spring to fall, this is it. Easy to grow and beautiful.

Hey Eric,

How do you know that this NOID is a tetraploid?

Hi Heather! I only have one Epidendrum and am still learing about them. Blooming size plants vary widely depending on what species they are or were derived from. Some epidendrums are dwarfs less than 6 inches tall and others can grow to more than 6 feet! I don't think the fall would have set it back much. Mine actually grew faster after disturbing it by repotting.

It sounds like your problem is lack of light. Most Epidendrums like very high light, and can even take full sun (not the hottest mid-day sun though) if they are acclimated slowly. If you have a brighter spot try moving it there or supplement with artificial lighting
