"Baggie" Blc King George Serendipity - Orchid Board

This was one of those inexpensive "baggies" from a big box store. Had since '06, blooming for the first time. Nice substance, peachy/pink and fragrant. I understand that Carter & Holmes uses quite a bit in their crosses.

Nice one, Don. There is a special place in my heart for those poor "baggie" orchids. I have quite a few myself. I'd be very happy if they turned out nearly as nice as yours. Great form, nice color, foliage all trained. Look how far this one has come. Well done!

Thanks Royal for all the encouragement. I see so many individuals that buy those "all but dead after blooming" from the stores at reduced prices and they lucky if they make it. I'd rather pay $10. for those baggies that are healthy and watch them grow to blooming.

I've just noticed that my Blc King George Serendipity has the beginnings of two flower spikes. This will be my first blooming of this plant, so I am very excited.

Is a 'baggie' a rescue orchid?

NO, what I call "baggies" are those that are sold in the big box stores (Lowes, Home Depot etc.) that come enclosed in plastic bags. They are normally seedlings and usually take 2-3 years before blooming. Tho I have known some to bloom quicker. But on the other hand you could call them "rescued" orchids if you buy them before they dry up and half dead, so you are rescueing them before they die. Blc King George Serendipity is a very nice orchid, enjoy!

I've never seen orchids sold like that in Australian giant hardware stores, like Bunnings. I must have a closer look! Yikes, I would feel sorry for them and probably want to buy them all.
Do they come from Asia in bulk like that?
I actually have success with online purchases, either Feebay or mail-order companies in Australia. They are much cheaper than your average nursery.

Thats a keeper for sure, I bought a C.intermedia baggy from Lowes this summer, it is doing good looks like it has a couple years to go.

Lovley chid, Don!

The name tag should read Blc George King 'Serendipity'.
I have one and this is the only chid that I seem to be allergic to!

When it's blooming, the fragrance is beautiful but I have to remember to enjoy it from a distance. If I get too close, I can't breathe right for days!

Yesterday, in Lowe's, I saw a bagged Blc George King 'Southern Cross' which is an orange art shade and just beautiful but I passed it up

The 'baggies' I sell at my HD are from Better-Gro. They come in two pot sizes, 2" - $4.67 and 3" - $5.67. The pot is in a white mesh bag with a big tag at the top with a picture of the flower. I hang them on peg hooks in the store's greenhouse to get max light and water/fertilize as needed.
I have never grown any and have always wondered how long it takes for them to get to flowering size. Two - three years seems like a long time.
