Hang in there Steve! I was getting pretty frustrated myself before this flower. I guess these guys are like the cheetahs of the Cattleya world, they dont have much in the way of extra energy stores (and they grow really fast! ) so my guess is they need to have several "mature" p-bulbs to bloom rather than just one, as in many other Cattleyas.

FYI This one is from H&R. I saw one of their 'parent' plants in bloom and its just amazing. The pink on the lip is NEON!! Just a brilliant pink. I knew I had to get one of their seedlings and am pretty happy with the result, especially since this is a first bloom.
