So now I just have to find the cause of the physical damage. Well, it is good to rule out virus, as the goats across the street must have read my mind this morning about Betty's potential fate. They were standing at the fence line staring at my house, almost sensing that a holiday treat would be heading their way.

All sorts of things can cause damage like that. Slugs, caterpillars (both of which can be long gone by the time you try to find them). Sometimes the developing lip just gets "caught" when it's unfurling, and so gets torn. Next year, another chance. Doo doo occurs...
