( Catanoches Midnight Jem X Mormodes sinuate )
This is an orchid with a very unusual flower color creating a dramatic stunning display of silky shimmering blooms with its total absorption of light. I think this is the closest a flower can get to the color black but I can see a tinge of very dark maroon on the stems attaching to the petals with graceful pendulous spike of fragrant flowers. Notice the centermost of the flower has a milky nectar that smells like spearmint.
I give this bright shaded light to produce robust canes, yet this orchid is very flexible as to light and heat requirements. Flowers can last up to six weeks or longer before the dormancy begins. The leaves are starting to yellow and wither so I started to gradually withhold water=and when the flowers and leaves are gone it will no longer receive water or fertilizer until it brings forth a new growth.
I did a double take when I first saw this orchid on the window a year ago and it wanted to come home with me. It was at a very reasonable price so I bought it and gave it a home.
This is placed in the east facing window sill near the humidifier with an oscillating fan, weekly weakly fertilizer alternated with seaweed mix.
